How To Fix a Wii remote Thats Not Syncing or Working Correctly

Posted by Sean Mactaggart on

How to sync a Wii remote:

  1. Press the Power button on the Wii console to turn it on.
  2. Open the SD Card Slot cover on the front of the Wii console. If you are using a Wii mini, the sync button is located on the left hand side next to the battery compartment. The sync button is a darker shade of red than the console.
  3. Remove the battery cover on the back of the Wii Remote to be synced.
  4. Press and release the SYNC button just below the batteries on the Wii Remote; the Player LED on the front of the Wii Remote will blink. While the lights are still blinking, quickly press and release the red SYNC button on the Wii console.
  5. When the Player LED blinking stops and stays lit, the syncing is complete. The LED that is illuminated indicates the player number (1 through 4).
  6. This sync procedure must be followed for each additional Wii Remote added to the system.

How to clear syncs on Wii:

  1. Turn on the Wii console and wait until the Health & Safety screen appears (don't press the A Button).
  2. Open the small flap on the front of the Wii console and locate a red button labeled "SYNC."
  3. This button is located on the left side of the Wii mini.
  4. Press and hold the SYNC Button down for 15 seconds. This will clear all the syncs on the Wii.
  5. Sync the Wii Remote(s) to the console.
  6. Each Wii Remote being used with the console will need to be synced

How to reset a Wii remote:

  1. Take out the batteries, wait for one minute, and then reinsert them (there is no need to use new batteries).
  2. Wait a few seconds before pressing any buttons to wake up the Wii Remote.
  3. Resync the Wii Remote.

If all else fails:

The lights on the Wii Remote blink momentarily before turning off means that the Wii Remote is not paired with your system.  Follow these steps to allow your Wii Remote to pair (or "sync") with your Wii console.

  1. Unplug the power cord from the Wii console, and let it sit for at least a few seconds.
  2. Remove the battery cover from your Wii Remote.
  3. Plug the power cord back into the console and power it on.
  4. Press and release the SYNC button on your Wii Remote.
  5. The Wii Remote's lights will start flashing.
  6. While the Wii Remote lights flash, press and release the SYNC button on the Wii console.
  7. This button is located on the left side of the Wii mini.
  8. The Wii Remote lights should go from flashing to one single solid light.
